The REACH Group's WellBore Manufacturing™ process provides proven tools for fact-based, data-driven creation and management of Operating Best Practices for sustainable performance improvement.
WellBore Manufacturing™ will help your team to methodically manage knowledge and make sure that the right knowledge is available at the right place and time on all your rigs.
Performance improvement in multi-rig green field developments typically show rapid performance increases within the first 20 wells (50% improvement is not unusual). This is generally due to optimization of the drilling parameters. Knowledge easily spreads virally within the organization through the drilling engineers and managers. After initial gains, the learning curve flattens as technological opportunities are fully exploited.
As the learning curve flattens, considerable variance will still exist between the best performing rigs and the worst performing rigs. The variance between the best and worst performing rigs adds considerable cost to a drilling program (20% to 40% is not unusual). Large differences can exist even between technically identical rigs. These differences can only be explained by how the rigs are operated. Knowledge of how to optimize the use of the rig floor has a very limited opportunity to spread virally due to geographic isolation and limited conversations and visits between rigs. The REACH Group's WellBore Manufacturing™ process solves these problems with a fact-based, data-driven approach to creating and implementing Operational Best Practices. A "boots on the rig floor" process focuses on the people working on each rig to build a consensus within your organization on rig operation best practices.
REACH's WellBore Manufacturing™ process has 4 basic phases:Analyze – Discuss – Document - Challenge.
REACH's proprietary methodology and software provides the means to understand large performance history data sets for multiple wells and rigs. The REACH analysis tools are considerably more robust than analysis that can be conducted with a spreadsheet or industry-standard databases. After raw data from your reporting database is converted for analysis by the REACH History Analyzer (RHA), a near infinite number of questions can be framed that the RHA can quickly answer.
The RHA ranks rigs according to each activity to identify where the best performance is occurring, analyze the distribution of non-productive time and flat time, measure shifts in average and median performance between time periods, identify learning trends and variance, quantify the impact of unplanned events on overall performance, as well as many other useful features. REACH also supplies daily performance metrics against a variety of historical benchmarks when field implementation begins.
Armed with data from the Analysis phase, REACH Performance Specialists work with your team both in the field and in the office to build a consensus around the optimum approach to each phase of the well construction process. Objective information allows your team to reconcile different viewpoints to agree on Operational Best Practices (OBPs) with broad buy-in from the entire team.
Based on the input from your personnel and service suppliers, REACH Performance Specialists create a workbook of OBPs for the entire well construction process. This provides a fixed point of reference for final approval by management as well as providing a framework for reviewing proposals for improving the OBPs or handling special situations.
Existing procedures can always be improved. WellBore Manufacturing™ provides an objective framework for collecting, implementing, and validating new ideas with hard data to drive continuous improvement.
